A door that drags, a crack over a window, a floor that no longer feels level: if you see signs like these, Abilene House Leveling can pass your request to a local company. Abilene House Leveling is a referral service run by R&S. Call the number on this page and we pass your request to one independent local company, which looks at the house, gives you its own quote and does the work. Abilene House Leveling is not a house leveling or foundation repair company, and nobody from Abilene House Leveling comes to your home. Our service to you is free, and the company may pay us for the referral.

How a call turns into a quote

The same call covers a house that needs leveling and a foundation that needs repair, on a slab or on a raised pier and beam floor.

Who does the work?

The work is done by an independent local company, not by Abilene House Leveling. That company agrees on the price with you. The section below says what to ask about licenses and permits.

Abilene House Leveling does not supervise the job and is not a party to the agreement you sign. Any license, insurance or other detail about the company comes from the company itself.

Is there a TDLR license for foundation work, and what does Abilene ask of contractors?

TDLR does not list foundation repair, so there is no TDLR license to look up. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation lists the trades it regulates on its home page, and foundation repair is not on that list (read October 18, 2026). Plumbing is a different matter: the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners carries the banner "Always hire a licensed plumber", so ask who handles any plumbing lines near the foundation.

The City of Abilene requires contractors to register with the city, at no fee, through its Contractor Information page. The page does not say whether a foundation repair company has to register, so put that question to the company. For permits, the city's Building Inspections page says a permit must be obtained before improvements or alterations to a property, and it tells owners who are unsure to contact the office. It does not name foundation repair or house leveling. If you want to know what an inspection visit covers before you call, read about foundation inspection.

What the ground and the weather around Abilene mean for a call

Abilene's normal annual rainfall is 23.78 inches, according to the Texas State Historical Association, and the same source records severe droughts in 1909-10 and 1917-18. The same association's Taylor County entry calls the county semi-arid. A dry spell is not a thing of the past: on October 9, 2026 the National Weather Service in San Angelo reported that drought had worsened across the Big Country over the previous four weeks (Drought Information Statement).

Why does drought matter when you call about your foundation? An Ask Extension answer says soil with a high clay content shrinks when it dries, and that tree roots, by pulling water from the soil, intensify the effect of drought. Taylor County's surface soils are loamy, and its clayey subsoils often contain lime. None of these sources rates Abilene's soil for shrink and swell, so this site does not claim that every lot moves. When you call, say whether big trees stand close to the house and whether the cracks came or grew in a dry stretch. The company can then decide what to check on site.

Where requests come from

Requests for house leveling or foundation repair are taken from these places:

  • Abilene: in the northeast corner of Taylor County, with Interstate 20 and U.S. Highways 83, 84 and 277 serving it.
  • Tye: in northern Taylor County, eight miles west of Abilene and just north of Dyess Air Force Base.
  • Merkel: in northwestern Taylor County, off Interstate 20 about seventeen miles west of Abilene.
  • Clyde: an incorporated city in Callahan County, not Taylor County, on Interstate 20 and Farm Road 604.

The permit rules this site has found are Abilene's. It has not found rules for Clyde, Merkel or Tye, and Clyde lies in another county, so ask the company which office handles a permit at your address.

How the facts on these pages are checked

Each local fact on this site is stored with the page it came from and the date it was read. Prices show their source and date too. If a number has no source, it is left out. A fact check compares every figure and rule on a page with that stored source, and the owner of R&S approves the final version before anything is published.

The date at the bottom of a page shows the last update.
